I’m enjoying a two-week residency at the Vermont Studio Center, an amazing oasis for writers and visual artists. Here is today’s sunrise, seen through a melting/frozen bedroom window, 7:30 a.m.

Everyone Leaves You

I just stole into my old housemate Rachel’s beautiful octagonal front room - now empty of her dresser, bed, etc.- but still containing a fireplace, an antique lace curtain, and a full mirror. Along with several high windows.

Guess what? The sound in this empty room is amazing. All week I have been wanting to record in here but was waiting for a day when my wailin’ wouldn’t wake anyone up and when the construction outside wasn’t competing for sound space.

I didn’t quite get there- you can hear plenty of bulldozers, truck beeps, airplanes and rustling tree leaves if you listen hard- but I’m very pleased with this echo-y, naked-mixed, hard to understand the words-version of my country song. I hope you enjoy, and I hope it brings you back to the days when the only effects needed were the bare acoustics of a church hall or the underbelly of a bridge.
